california design, 1930–1965

A  re-creation of the living room from a  Charles and Ray Eames home.

Now at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, "Living in a Modern Way" is  an exhibit and study on California Midcentury Modern design. It's the first of it's kind in this design genre, and features furniture, ceramics, fashion, textiles, metalwork and industrial and graphic designs. Here's a sneak peek:

Modern and sleek cantilevered sofas

Recreation of a 1951 Los Angeles Times “Home” Magazine living room

Unique midcentury style

A playful combination of pieces

Fashion meets comfort

Beachy style

Avanti, 1961

The Airstream Clipper, 1936

I'm planning my visit next week...

I had read about this! The thing that caught my eye was the Barbie Dream house...her actual cardboard, foldout Dream House from the 1960s. Too many of them couldn't hold up to time and handling, so they're pretty rare. Barbie was "happening" and cool in the early 60s, reflecting dream life/real life, so it makes sense she's in this exhibition.
